MG MGA - STEERING GAITORS [SEALS]
My steering has seemed a bit too stiff this summer so I jacked up the front end to lift the tires off.
The steering still seemed stiff so with my dedicated oiling grease gun I pumped in about 30 squirts. [very little oil came out per squirt] so I pumped in another 50. All told about a 1/4 cup of added oil. After the second session of oiling I suddenly hear a squishing sound when turning the wheel . Sure enough, the left front gaitor was now leaking oil. I did not see a gaitor leak before but I never checked for one either. The steering seemed a bit easier to turn the wheels but I am wondering if my steering rack oil level was about right and I over filled and in doing so blew the gaitor or my rack oil level was low & I just brought the level up so that oil flowed into the gaitor and started leaking from an earlier crack. I would like to know if I over fill the steering rack with a grease gun with oil will I risk blowing a seal. Does anyone know the oil capacity? And finally, will MGB gaitors fit MGA steering arms. My MGA built in 1960 has disk brakes. Thanks Morris |

MGB gaiters do not fit MGA (different size on the big end). Install new gaiters any time you find a leak. Keep oil in and dirt out. The rack wants 6 to 8 fluid ounces of EP80W90 gear oil. And yes, it will gurgle nicely at both ends when steering lock to lock. |

Thanks. I will be replacing both gators and all the rubber used in the front suspension this winter. The complete restoration was finished 10 years ago when rubber products were lousy so no surprise. Cheers Morris |
